This course deals with serious conditions and incidents involving children and infants. You will learn what to do in an emergency, practise CPR skills specific to this age group and understand about treatment for common accidents and illnesses in very small children.

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for NCT groups, all parents, grandparents or guardians who care for young children and babies and who are unable to attend the more in-depth Essential Life Support and Basic First Aid Courses.

What you will learn?

The course offers a succinct combination of the Essential Life Support and Basic First Aid courses, with less practical input and a faster delivery. The course covers care of the unconscious infant or child who is either breathing or not-breathing and treatment of commonly occurring accidents and illnesses in very young children.

Course content

  • Action at an emergency – priorities of treatment

  • Treatment of an unconscious, non-breathing baby – baby CPR

  • What to do if your baby is unconscious but breathing – Recovery position

  • Choking – theory and practical

  • What to put in your First Aid Kit

  • What to do if your baby is hurt

  • Major and minor bleeds

  • Burns & electric shock

  • Anaphylaxis (allergic reaction)

  • Poisons

  • Head injury – concussion, compression & skull fracture

  • Breaks, sprains and dislocations

  • What to do when your baby is ill

  • Croup & breathing problems

  • Febrile convulsions & hypothermia

  • Meningitis & septicaemia

Approx. 3 hours

Assessment and certification

Continuous assessment by trainer.
