This course deals with accidents and illnesses commonly occurring in people undertaking exercise. It is ideal for therapists, coaches, and trainers working in a sports environment with adults and children.

Who should attend?

This course is for therapists, coaches and trainers who want to know what action to take when treating adults or young people who have had an accident, or become ill, when undertaking sports activities. This course may be sufficient for some insurance companies, or it may be preferable to undertake a one day EFAW or equivalent course which can also be adapted to include injuries in a sports environment.

What you will learn?

The course covers emergency life support procedures for adults and young people as well as commonly occurring injuries and illnesses in those undertaking exercise.

Course content

 

Action at an emergency – priorities of treatment

  Care of the adult or child who is unconscious but breathing – Recovery position
  Care of the adult who is unconscious and not breathing – CPR     differences between adult and child CPR
  Importance of a defibrillator
  Care of a casualty with a possible spinal injury
  Heart Attack and angina
  Treatment of a choking adult and child
  Treatment of bleeding, grazes, embedded objects, teeth knocked out, amputated parts, eye injuries, nose bleeds...
  Burns including electrical - if applicable
  Treatment of bites and stings
  Treatment of fainting, hypothermia and heat exhaustion
  Recognition and treatment of shock including allergic reaction
  Head injuries - skull fracture, compression and concussion
  Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and other seizures
  Bone, muscle and joint injuries - breaks, sprains, strains and dislocations

Assessment and certification

Continuous assessment by trainer. Certificate valid for 3 years
