This course focuses on emergency scenarios that are faced by professionals, including teachers, au pairs and playgroup leaders, looking after children.

It meets Ofsted requirements for registered childminders and the requirements for nannies under the DfES Approved Carers Scheme. It can also be used as evidence for employees working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education.

Who should attend?

This course is for people working with children of all ages, or working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education, or for parents or carers who would like a comprehensive paediatric First Aid course.

What you will learn?

The course covers how to deal with accidents and emergencies involving young children.

Course content

  • First aid kit.

  • Action planning.

  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty.

  • Resuscitation.

  • Recognising and treating shock in babies and children.

  • Anaphylaxis and use of the Epipen.

  • Choking.

  • Asthma and diabetic emergencies.

  • Head injuries.

  • Seizures.

  • Bleeding, grazes, embedded objects, amputated parts, knocked out teeth, mouth injury, eye injury, bruising, nose bleeds, objects in eyes, ears, nose...

  • Burns and scalds.

  • The child's response to extreme heat and cold.

  • Febrile convulsions.

  • Sprains, strains and fractures.

  • Poisoning, bites and stings.

  • Foreign objects.

  • Childhood conditions (e.g. septicaemia, meningitis, croup).

Course duration

Approx. 12 hours - for group bookings
Scheduled accelerated courses lasting one day

Assessment and certification

Continuous assessment by trainer. Certificate valid for 3 years awarded on the day.
