This course deals with accidents and incidents involving adults, babies or children. You will learn what to do in an emergency, practise CPR skills and understand about treatment for common accidents and illnesses.

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for anyone who would like to know what to do if faced with a serious medical emergency, as well as understanding how to cope with a variety of  accidents and illnesses. The course is ideal for parents and carers and for people who require a basic working knowledge of First Aid for use in their workplace. You can choose to focus on adult, baby or child First Aid and concentrate on practising with the age appropriate mannequins  - or have a go with all of them.

What you will learn?

The course is extremely practical and you will have hands-on experience with adult, baby and child mannequins. The groups are small, to ensure that everyone has individual attention. you will learn what to do in an extreme medical emergency, how to help someone if they are choking or drowning, what to look for following a head injury and when to call an ambulance. The course covers commonly occurring accidents, illnesses and medical emergencies in adults, babies and children. Additional areas will be added on request.

Course content

(for guidance only, the course will be adapted according to individual needs, additional areas such as anaphylactic shock and the use of an Epipen, management of asthma… can be added if relevant) 

  • Action at an emergency – how to work out if something is life threatening
  • Care of the adult, baby or child who is unconscious but breathing – differences between adult, baby and child recovery positions
  • What to do if someone is unconscious and not breathing – CPR differences between adult, baby & child CPR
  • The importance of the defibrillator
  • Management of an adult, baby or child with a possible spinal injury
  • Choking – theory and practical with adults, babies and children
  • Drowning
  • What to put in your First Aid Kit
  • Major and minor bleeds, how to treat someone with an amputated finger, knocked out teeth…
  • How to help someone who is burnt or has been electrocuted
  • Poisoning
  • Head injury – concussion, compression & skull fracture – what to look out for and for how long
  • Treatment of all forms of clinical shock.
  • What to do if someone is fitting
  • How to recognise meningitis
