EFAW HSE Approved (Appointed Person)

(with additions to cover areas omitted from main syllabus)

This course is an HSE approved course ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks, where a nominated or appointed person is required to take charge in the event of an illness or accident. It is also recommended for larger companies when additional First Aid personal are needed to assist those with the more thorough 3 day First Aid at Work qualification.

Who should attend?

This course is ideal for ‘nominated’ persons or for people who provide support to qualified first aiders.

What you will learn?

Basic life saving first aid and workplace health and safety regulations. Key components of the Emergency Life Support and Basic Life Skills courses tailored to meet your individual needs. Baby and child First Aid can be included if required.

Course content

  • Managing an incident.
  • The priorities of first aid.
  • Dealing with emergencies.
  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty who is breathing – recovery position.
  • Treatment of an unconscious casualty who is not breathing – CPR
  • Importance of a defibrillator
  • Heart Attack and Angina
  • Choking
  • Care of a casualty with suspected spinal injuries *
  • Shock including acute allergic reaction
  • Bleeding, grazes, embedded objects, amputated parts, knocked out teeth, mouth injury, eye injury, bruising, nose bleeds, objects in eyes, ears, nose…
  • Bites and stings
  • Burns, scalds and electrocution
  • Head injuries, concussion, compression & skull fracture *
  • Recognising and treating asthma, diabetes and epilepsy *
  • Breaks, soft tissue injuries & dislocations *
  • Anaphylactic shock and the use of an Epipen
  • Common workplace injuries
  • Contents of a First Aid Kit
  • The aftermath, accident forms…
  • * Head injuries, breaks & soft tissue injuries, spinal injuries and asthma are not included within the HSE syllabus – but can be incorporated into the course.

    Course duration

    One day – 6 hours.

    Assessment and certification

    Continuous assessment by trainer. HSE Certificates valid for 3 years
