This is a practical course for Au Pairs and carers to ensure that they are confident to deal with children in an emergency or when general accidents happen around the house. Classes can be adapted to suit students who do not speak English as their first language.

Who should attend?

This course is for people responsible for caring for children and young people.

What you will learn?

The course covers what to do in a medical emergency, accidents in the home and recognition and treatment of common injuries and childhood conditions.

Course content – ( for guidance only, can be adapted according to individual needs)

  Action in an emergency - Priorities of treatment and managing the scene.
  Looking after yourself and the casualty.
  Care of the unconscious casualty
  What to do if unconscious but breathing - recovery position
  What to do if unconscious and not breathing - CPR
  Differences between adult, baby and child CPR - practical
  Treatment of a choking adult, baby or child - practical
  Drowning
  Bleeding, embedded objects, amputated parts, grazes, nose bleeds, objects in eyes, ears, noses...
  Burns and electrocution
  Treatment of bites and stings
  Head injuries.
  Recognition and treatment of shock including acute allergic reaction.
  Poisoning
  Asthma and breathing problems
  Febrile convulsions, epilepsy and other seizures.
  Bone, muscle and joint injuries.
  meningitis and septicaemia

Course duration

Approx. 3 hours

Assessment and certification

Continuous assessment by trainer.
