First aid for Au Pairs and child carers

This course is for Au Pairs and carers to ensure that they are confident to deal with children in an emergency or when general accidents happen around the house. Classes can be adapted to suit students who do not speak English as their first language.

This course does not include CPR. It is therefore recommended that this course is attended in conjunction with the life support course for infants and children.

Who should attend?

This course is for people responsible for caring for children and young people.

What you will learn?

The course covers prevention of accidents in the home and recognition and treatment of common injuries and diseases encountered with small children.

Course content – (can be adapted according to individual needs)

  Health and Safety around the home.
  Communication and casualty care.
  Looking after yourself and the casualty.
  Priorities of first aid and managing the scene.
  Treatment of minor bleeding and minor burns.
  Treatment of an unconscious breathing casualty – brief overview:
(covered in full detail in emergency life support classes).
  Treatment of a choking child and infant.
  Treatment of bites and stings, sprains and strains.
  Treatment of fainting and head injuries.
  Treatment of severe bleeding and severe burns.
  Recognition and treatment of shock.
  Recognition and treatment for poisons and foreign bodies.
  Asthma, diabetes, meningitis, epilepsy and other seizures.
  Bone, muscle and joint injuries.
  Crush injuries

Approx. 2½ hours

Assessment and certification

Continuous assessment by trainer.
